This is a famous and old Madeira tradition, held on January,27th, is enjoyed with a special feeling by the local residents of Seixal, a small village located near Porto Moniz. This social gathering takes place early in the morning at Chão da Ribeira, on the first sunday after the religious feast of St. Antão, an occasion where families come together to prepare the “Panelo”, a culinary dish made of vegetables and blood sausage, very similar to “Cozido à Portuguesa” (Portuguese stew). This occasion also features stalls, selling local food and drinks, along with lots of entertainment.
As a result of its long association with the sea, Semana do Mar began as a tribute to the sea that has always marked the history, economy and culture of Porto Moniz.
From a traditional fishermen's festival and canoe regatta to a summer festival, Semana do Mar has evolved a great deal over time, gaining momentum and establishing itself as a summer festival where gastronomy and music are the focus, attracting thousands of people.
It's the biggest cultural, recreational and sporting event in the municipality, where over the course of a week there are countless nautical activities such as traditional canoe races, canoeing competitions, sea games, fishing contests, as well as gastronomic exhibitions and street entertainment.
With the land and sea as a backdrop, numerous artists from the national and international regional music scene have already performed at Semana do Mar.
Entertainment, culture, gastronomy and nautical activities come together in Madeira's most diverse festival.
Not to be missed every year in the last week of July.
